Where should I hang a large overmantle mirror?

These mirrors are traditionally positioned centrally above a fireplace mantel to reflect light and anchor the room's proportions. Ensure the wall fixings are rated for substantial weight, as nineteenth-century frames utilise heavy timber and thick glass.

How do I clean an antique mirror frame?

Dust the ebonised wood gently with a soft, dry cloth to protect the delicate gold leaf and painted details. Avoid commercial chemical sprays, which can strip the ebonised finish and damage the gesso beneath.

What is the difference between Victorian and Regency styles?

Regency designs lean towards classical restraint and architectural symmetry, while Victorian pieces often embrace heavier ornamentation and ornate gesso work. Victorian aesthetic examples also introduce refined black finishes influenced by Japanese art and the Aesthetic Movement.

Can these mirrors be placed on the floor?

Many tall pier and wall mirrors are substantial enough to rest safely against a wall without hanging. When leaning a heavy frame, secure the top with safety brackets to prevent tipping.
