What defines a baroque portrait?

Baroque portraits are characterised by dynamic movement, deep shadows, and intense psychological presence. Painters used dramatic lighting to draw focus to the face and elaborate garments of the sitter. These works often include symbolic objects such as curtains, books, or oranges to indicate the status and profession of the individual portrayed.

How do I care for an antique oil painting?

Keep oil paintings away from direct sunlight and dramatic fluctuations in temperature and humidity. These environmental controls prevent the canvas from warping and the paint from cracking. Dust the surface gently with a soft, dry brush and avoid using chemical cleaners on the paint or the giltwood frame.

What is the difference between an original oil and a mezzotint?

An original oil painting is a unique work created by applying pigment suspended in oil directly to canvas or wood. Each brushstroke is singular and executed by the artist. A mezzotint is an engraved print produced from a copper plate, allowing multiple impressions to be made after a master painting.

How can I tell seventeenth-century portraits apart from eighteenth-century ones?

Seventeenth-century portraits frequently feature starker lighting inspired by Caravaggio, with heavier ruffs, lace collars, and sober expressions. The palette tends towards darker, earthier tones. Eighteenth-century works often embrace rococo lightness, softer pastel shades, and more relaxed or theatrical poses reflecting changing social fashions.
