How do I install vintage lighting?

Vintage ceiling lights and wall sconces require mounting to standard electrical junction boxes by a qualified electrician. Rewiring is frequently necessary to meet modern safety standards while retaining the original external fittings. Care must be taken to support the weight of heavier bronze or multi-tiered crystal chandeliers using appropriate ceiling fixings.

Are these lights compatible with modern bulbs?

Most period fixtures accept standard modern screw or bayonet LED bulbs, provided the dimensions fit within the glass shade or globe. Clear or frosted LED lamps work well to replicate the original light output without generating excessive heat. Consult the physical dimensions of enclosed pendants and slip shade fixtures before selecting high-wattage bulbs.

How do I clean delicate glass shades?

Glass and crystal components should be removed from the metal frame and washed in lukewarm water with mild soap. A soft cloth prevents scratching on acid-etched, opaline, or satin surfaces. Metal fittings require separate maintenance using appropriate cleaners specific to brass, chrome, or copper without touching the glass.

How do I date an art deco light fixture?

Dating relies on stylistic indicators, materials, and manufacturing techniques characteristic of the 1920s and 1930s. The presence of chrome plating, slip shades, and geometric silhouettes generally points to the interwar period, while earlier Edwardian or Victorian pieces utilise heavier brass and cut glass. Signatures or maker stamps etched onto the glass provide definitive confirmation of origin and date.
