What is an antique wooden letter rack used for?

These pieces were built to sort and store incoming correspondence, envelopes, and writing paper on office desks or in domestic libraries. Today, they serve the same practical function for organising mail or holding contemporary stationery and small notebooks.

How do I date an antique letter rack?

Where should I place a letter rack at home?

Desktop models sit comfortably on writing tables, sideboards, or hall tables to manage daily post and paperwork. Wall-mounted organisers attach directly to study or hallway walls to save surface space while keeping correspondence visible.

How do I care for wooden letter racks?

Maintenance involves dusting with a dry cloth and occasionally feeding the wood with appropriate wax to preserve the finish. Keep pieces away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent the timber and any veneer from drying out.
