What is an antique wooden coffer box used for?

These pieces function as practical storage furniture for blankets, books, and household items while adding historical character to a modern interior. Their sturdy lids also allow them to double as occasional side tables or hallway benches depending on the specific proportions.

How should I care for an oak coffer box?

Protect the wood by keeping the box away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight, which can dry out and split the timber. Apply a traditional beeswax polish occasionally to nourish the surface and maintain the natural lustre of the antique finish.

What is the difference between a coffer and a mule chest?

A traditional coffer consists of a simple chest with a hinged lid opening from the top for general storage. A mule chest incorporates one or more drawers built into the base beneath the main compartment, offering easier access to smaller items.
