What is the difference between a bedside cabinet and a chest of drawers?

Bedside cabinets typically feature an enclosed cupboard door hiding a small shelf or storage space rather than horizontal sliding drawers. They were designed to keep chamber pots or personal items out of sight. Chests of drawers consist entirely of stacked pull-out drawers, offering more segmented storage for clothing or smaller nighttime accessories.

How do I date an antique wooden bedside table?

Dating relies on observing the secondary timbers, the style of the drawer dovetails, and the overall design idiom such as Georgian proportions or Edwardian satinwood inlay. Hardware styles and construction marks also provide clues to the decade of manufacture. Cabinet makers shifted through distinct aesthetic phases, moving from heavy Victorian pitch pine to lighter Edwardian satinwood and geometric Art Deco forms.

Are these pieces usually sold as pairs?

Many listings feature pairs of bedside chests, particularly from the Victorian and Edwardian periods when symmetrical bedroom furniture became fashionable. Single pieces are equally common, originating from earlier Georgian times or individual side tables adapted for bedroom use. Matching pairs command higher interest among collectors who prefer symmetry on both sides of a bed.

Can I use an antique side table as a bedside drawer?

Side tables and lamp tables often share the same compact footprint and drawer capacity as dedicated bedside furniture. Their open lower shelves or small single drawers suit modern bedside requirements. Checking the height of the table against your mattress level ensures comfortable access to the surface and drawer.
