How do I date a wooden chest of drawers?

Dating relies on observing structural characteristics, timber choices, and hardware styles associated with eras like Georgian or Victorian periods. Drawer construction techniques, such as hand-cut dovetails, provide reliable clues to the age of the piece. Secondary woods used inside the carcass also help confirm the manufacturing period. Cabinet makers often utilised regional timbers for internal components that differed from the primary external show wood.

Are antique wardrobes suitable for modern clothes hangers?

Many antique wardrobes and armoires were designed during periods when garments were folded rather than hung on modern coat hangers. Consequently, internal hanging depths can sometimes prove shallower than contemporary standards require. Buyers should verify internal dimensions before purchase if full-length modern hanging space is necessary. Some pieces retain original sliding shelves or linen presses that limit front-to-back clearance.

How should I care for antique mahogany furniture?

Maintaining antique mahogany requires keeping pieces away from direct heat sources and sudden humidity shifts. Consistent indoor climates prevent the solid timber and delicate veneers from splitting or warping. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth preserves the polished surface finish. Occasional application of appropriate wax feeds the grain without building up heavy chemical residues.
