How should I clean an antique wooden religious figure?

Dust the surface gently with a soft, dry brush to prevent the buildup of particles. Avoid using water, liquid cleaners, or household polishes, as moisture damages aged wood and historic polychrome paint. Keep the sculpture away from direct sunlight and severe humidity changes. Stable indoor conditions protect the timber from drying out and cracking over time.

Were these figures meant for homes or churches?

Many larger sculptures originated in churches, convents, or monastic settings where they served as altarpieces or focal points for communal worship. Life-size examples often occupied prominent architectural niches within religious buildings. Smaller devotional carvings were made for private prayer in domestic spaces. These portable statues allowed individuals to practice personal devotion outside formal ecclesiastical buildings.

How do I identify the age of a wooden carving?

Examine the tool marks left by the carver, as hand-chiselled surfaces differ from later machine-cut timber. Tool technology and style often align with particular centuries, such as Late Gothic drapery folds or Baroque theatricality. The condition of the wood, shrinkage splits, and the wear patterns on gesso and paint layers help indicate age. Analysing the specific timber species also provides clues regarding regional origin and period.

Why do some figures have missing paint?

Centuries of handling, movement between buildings, and changes in environment cause historical pigments to flake or wear away. This natural loss reveals the underlying gesso or bare wood beneath. Patina and losses are standard aspects of aged sacred art rather than structural defects. Collectors often value untouched surfaces that show the genuine passage of time.
