Will a standard modern mattress fit these beds?

Many older frames were built to historical sizing standards that differ slightly from contemporary mattress dimensions. Buyers often need to check exact internal rail measurements before purchasing. Custom mattress ordering or minor internal adjustments by a specialist restorer can ensure a proper fit without altering the external historical appearance of the wood.

How do I assemble an antique wooden bed?

Most timber frames utilise traditional iron bolts or wedge-lock side rail fittings that slot directly into the headboard and footboard posts. Proper alignment is essential to keep the structure square and stable. Two people are typically required for assembly to support the heavy hardwood components and avoid damaging the antique joints during positioning.

How should I care for walnut and mahogany finishes?

Natural timber requires consistent indoor humidity levels to prevent the wood from drying out or splitting over time. Avoid placing the frame near direct heat sources or strong sunlight. Occasional application of appropriate wax polish maintains the lustre of the grain, while dusting with a soft, dry cloth prevents surface accumulation.

How do I tell Victorian styles from Edwardian designs?

Victorian timber beds often feature darker, heavier proportions with deep polish, elaborate carvings, and substantial walnut or mahogany construction. Half testers and heavy paneling are common in this era. Edwardian pieces tend to display lighter proportions, simpler lines, and often draw inspiration from earlier Georgian revival styles with brighter mahogany or inlaid details.
