What is an antique salon suite?

A salon suite is a matching group of seating furniture created for formal reception spaces. These collections typically include a central sofa or settee accompanied by two or more matching armchairs. Such suites ensure visual harmony within a Victorian, Edwardian, or continental interior. They range from modest three-piece arrangements to large multi-piece drawing room sets.

How do I identify Art Deco suites?

Art Deco seating is defined by streamlined contours, rounded cloud shapes, and contrasting materials like zebrano wood or polished leather. These twentieth-century pieces often lack the ornate carving seen on earlier Victorian designs. Maker attributions and distinctive geometric or rounded profiles help distinguish these modern suites from nineteenth-century revivals.

Are these sets always matching?

Many groupings are assembled as complete matching suites from the same workshop or retail establishment. Others consist of closely related pieces or matched pairs of armchairs paired with a contemporary settee. Checking the wood grain, upholstery style, and frame construction helps determine whether pieces originated together.

What woods were used for frames?

Cabinetmakers utilised dense hardwoods such as walnut and mahogany for the structural frames of high-quality suites. Ebonised finishes, padauk, and painted surfaces also appear across different periods and regional styles. Selected timbers often feature decorative veneers, marquetry inlay, or detailed hand-carved motifs.
