How were antique silver buttons used?

These ornaments functioned primarily as detachable dress accessories for fastening high collars, cuffs, and heavy winter coats on formal garments. They allowed the wearer to transfer decorative metalwork between different outfits. Many sets were sold as luxury items intended for gift presentation rather than everyday utility, which explains why so many survive in original fitted boxes.

How do I store silver button sets?

Keep the pieces in their original fitted presentation cases where possible, as the velvet and silk linings protect the metal from excessive friction. Avoid storing them in damp environments to prevent tarnishing and degradation of the lining materials. Periodic inspection helps monitor the condition of delicate enamel or niello inlays without requiring aggressive chemical cleaning.

Are these buttons marked with hallmarks?

Many English pieces carry clear hallmarks indicating the assay office, such as Chester or London, alongside a date letter for the specific year of manufacture. Sterling standards are typically denoted by the lion passant stamp. Smaller buttons sometimes feature only partial marks due to limited surface area, making the presence of a complete set in a marked box particularly helpful.

What motifs are most common?

Floral and plant designs inspired by the Art Nouveau movement dominate the surviving record, featuring irises, water lilies, snowdrops, and poppies. Figurative subjects including classical maidens, cherubs, and animals also appear frequently. Special commemorative themes, such as coronation pieces or regional galleon ships, occur occasionally among continental and British outputs.
