How do I identify the period of an oil painting?

Examine the preparation of the canvas or panel, the style of the wooden stretcher, and the composition of the pigments used by the artist. Earlier works often display hand-woven canvas textures and specific craquelure patterns. Compare the clothing and posture of the figures to historical fashion plates of the era. Framing styles can also offer clues, though frames are frequently replaced over centuries of ownership.

Where should I hang a landscape painting with figures?

Position the piece at eye level in a room with controlled ambient light to prevent direct sunlight from degrading the oil pigments or watercolours over time. Wall spaces above mantelpieces or in reception rooms provide balanced viewing angles. Ensure the hanging wall remains free from dampness and extreme temperature fluctuations. A sturdy picture hook secured directly into wall studs supports heavier framed canvases safely.

How do I care for an antique canvas?

Dust the surface and the carved frame gently with a soft, dry brush to prevent particulate accumulation without disturbing the paint layer. Avoid using chemical cleaners, water or damp cloths on aged paint surfaces. Maintain stable humidity levels in the room to prevent the wooden stretcher and canvas from warping or cracking. Professional conservators should handle any structural repairs or deep cleaning.

What defines a genre painting?

A genre painting portrays human figures engaged in common daily activities rather than historical, mythological or religious subjects. These works capture ordinary moments like working in fields or resting by ponds. Collectors value these pieces for their documentation of past social customs, clothing and domestic tools. The realism and narrative depth often reflect the social attitudes of the painting's era.
