What periods do these storage drawers cover?

The selections span from the nineteenth century through the Edwardian era and into the early decades of the twentieth century. Examples include pieces from 1850 alongside 1930s industrial utility designs. Production dates reflect changing workplace demands, moving from formal library cabinets to standardised office filing systems and industrial workshop banks.

Which woods appear most often?

Oak and mahogany form the majority of the surviving cabinets, utilised for their strength and formal appearance in professional settings. Walnut, pine, beech, and teak also feature across specific regional styles. Metals like steel and brass appear frequently on industrial pieces, cartonnier mounts, and drawer pulls.

How were tambour front cabinets used?

Tambour doors slide smoothly along tracks to conceal the interior shelves or filing drawers without requiring clearance for swinging doors. This mechanism suited compact twentieth-century offices. They allowed clerks quick access to active files while maintaining a tidy exterior appearance.

What is a cartonnier cabinet?

A cartonnier is a French storage piece designed to hold unbound papers, correspondence, and documents in stacked compartments or drawers. They often feature leather accents and decorative mounts. Finer examples combined utility with formal salon or study decoration during the nineteenth century.

How do I identify industrial pieces?

Industrial office storage drawers typically feature robust steel, metal, or plain oak construction with minimal decorative carving. They prioritize utilitarian function over decorative veneer work. These units originated in workshops, post offices, and factories rather than executive offices.
