How do I date a silver match holder?

Dating relies on the assay office marks, maker marks, and date letters stamped directly onto the silver body. British hallmarked pieces display specific alphabetical characters that correspond to the exact year the item was submitted for testing.

Were these used for cigars?

Many match holders were manufactured as combination accessories alongside sovereign holders, cigar cutters, or double-ended compartments. Smokers carried them to keep matches dry and readily accessible alongside their tobacco products during the Victorian and Edwardian eras.

Silver match holders benefit from gentle dusting with a soft microfiber cloth to preserve the dark highlights within engraved recessed lines. Harsh chemical dips should be avoided, particularly on pieces featuring hand-painted enamel or gilt surfaces.
