What is KPM Berlin porcelain?

KPM stands for Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin, the historic royal porcelain manufactory established in the Prussian capital. The factory became celebrated for its brilliant white hard-paste body and exceptional standards of enamel painting. Items range from delicate cabinet cups to monumental painted plaques and figural table centrepieces. Collectors prize them for their artistic ambition and direct link to nineteenth-century German craftsmanship.

How do I identify a KPM piece?

Most Berlin factory items bear underglaze blue sceptre marks and often iron-red orb and letters, though specific marks changed across decades. Examining the fineness of the hand-painted enamel and the crispness of the moulded porcelain helps confirm origin. Forms like topographical cabinet cups, figural salts with putti, and heavy gilding point directly to the Berlin workshops. Comparing the style of painting to documented nineteenth-century examples secures proper attribution.

Were these pieces meant for daily use?

Cabinet cups, demitasse cups, and coffee pots served functional purposes in wealthy households, though many were decorative presentation pieces. Items like porcelain plaques and large lidded vases were strictly ornamental from their creation. Table salts and sugar shakers sat on formal dining tables during service. Over time, surviving tableware transitioned entirely into display cabinets due to the delicacy of the enamel and gold leaf.

How should I display porcelain plaques?

Porcelain plaques require secure wall mounting or dedicated stands, much like framed oil paintings. Many period examples arrive with original ormolu, giltwood, or gesso frames designed specifically for the plaque. Keeping them away from direct sunlight protects the painted enamel colours from fading. Placing them at eye level allows viewers to appreciate the fine brushwork in portraits and literary scenes.
