What is an escritoire?

An escritoire is an enclosed writing cabinet designed for correspondence and storage, typically featuring a drop-front or fall-front panel that opens to reveal a fitted interior with small drawers and pigeonholes. These pieces combine the utility of a desk with the formal appearance of a cabinet, allowing writing materials to be hidden away neatly when not in use.

Where were escritoires used?

These cabinets served primarily in private withdrawing rooms, bedrooms, and libraries of grand houses where personal letters were written. They provided a private space for correspondence and document storage. Today, they function effectively in modern home studies or living rooms as decorative storage units that offer practical desk space.

How do I tell Victorian from Edwardian pieces?

Victorian escritoires often feature darker timbers like walnut and rosewood, frequently accompanied by heavy burr veneers, brass inlay, and elaborate marquetry. The construction is generally heavier and more ornate. Edwardian examples lean towards lighter woods such as satinwood and mahogany, often displaying Sheraton revival motifs with restrained stringing and a brighter overall palette.

How do I care for inlaid wood?

Maintain inlaid furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and steady sources of artificial heat to prevent the timber and delicate veneer from drying out or warping. Dust gently with a dry, soft cloth. Apply a microcrystalline wax polish sparingly when the wood appears dry, avoiding silicone-based sprays that can penetrate old finishes and damage delicate inlay work.
