Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century Dutch Baroque escritoire is formed of walnut with a warm brown finish and intricate floral marquetry inlays across the fall front panel, three lower drawers, top frieze drawer, and side gables. The structured form stands upon realistic carved animal claw feet at the front and bracket feet to the back, complemented by brass key escutcheons and columns with brass capitals flanking the drop-down writing compartment. It measures 166 cm high, 102 cm wide, and 52 cm deep, with a writing surface height of 84 cm. Placed within a gentleman's library, study, or sophisticated reception room, the cabinet provides enclosed storage and a dedicated writing surface behind the fall-front flap, alongside internal pigeonholes, a central cupboard, and smaller drawers. The lower section incorporates three drawers for additional organization, while the broad top surface permits the display of decorative objects within a traditional interior scheme.

FAQs

A Dutch marquetry fall front escritoire, also known as a secretaire a abattant, is a tall upright writing cabinet incorporating a hinged drop-down flap that serves as a desktop, set above vertical drawer storage and decorated with decorative floral veneer inlays.

These cabinets were typically constructed with solid oak or pine carcases overlaid with fine timber veneers such as walnut, mahogany, or fruitwood, featuring intricate floral and foliate motifs rendered in contrasting stained woods and bone.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass hardware with natural oxidisation, hand-sawed timber veneer layers, and natural age-related shrinkage lines along the joinery and panel edges.

A marquetry escritoire functions as a striking focal piece in a modern study or living room, offering modern utility when opened for laptop work while concealing clutter behind its decorated fall-front panel when closed.

Timber marquetry should be kept in a climate-controlled environment away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dusted regularly with a soft lint-free cloth, and periodically treated with a natural beeswax polish.
