Hongmu translates as red wood and covers a group of dense, heavy tropical hardwoods prized in Chinese furniture making. The material ranges in tone from deep reddish-brown to near black. Over time, the timber develops a rich patina through handling and natural ageing. Its weight and density make it exceptionally durable for load-bearing items like tables and chairs.

How do I care for antique hardwood furniture?

Keep hongmu pieces away from direct heat sources and rapid humidity changes to prevent the dense wood from splitting. Dust regularly with a dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical polishes. Applying a light coat of natural wax periodically helps nourish the surface and maintain the subdued sheen of the timber. Handle inset marble tops with care during cleaning to protect the surrounding joints.

What are Qing dynasty style stands used for?

These smaller tables and stands were traditionally positioned to elevate decorative objects, porcelain vessels or scholar's rocks. Their sturdy construction supports substantial weight despite compact footprints. In modern interiors, they function effectively as plant stands, bedside surfaces or occasional tables. Their varied heights and forms allow them to fit into constrained spaces.

How do nests of four tables work?

A nest comprises four distinct tables sized progressively so each smaller one slides beneath the next. This arrangement maximises surface area while occupying the floor space of a single small table. Originating as versatile furniture for entertaining or display, they can be separated across a room for drinks or gathered together when cleared. The hongmu frames require careful alignment so the tables glide smoothly.
