How were scent flasks used in the past?

These flasks served as personal deodorisers and emergency revival kits in crowded social spaces where unpleasant odours were common. Owners carried them inside small handbags or suspended them from chatelaine hooks fastened to their waistbands. Vinaigrette versions held vinegar-soaked sponges to combat lightheadedness, while standard bottles dispensed liquid perfume throughout the day.

How do I identify a Victorian scent flask?

Victorian scent flasks typically feature heavy cut glass or rich coloured bodies like ruby, green, or turquoise opaline. They are frequently fitted with sterling silver hinged lids, screw caps, or ornate silver overlay. Many examples from this era carry English silver hallmarks that date the metal mount precisely to a specific year and assay office.

Are Art Deco scent flasks different?

Art Deco scent flasks shift away from ornate Victorian floral motifs toward geometric lines, moulded glass, and vibrant enamel work. Makers during this period embraced machine-age aesthetics and simplified silhouettes. European workshops, particularly in Czechoslovakia and France, produced mould-blown bottles featuring frosted surfaces and contrasting black or coloured enamel highlights.

How should I display my scent flask?

Scent flasks look best displayed upright in a lighted cabinet where light can pass through the coloured or cut glass bodies. Because many pieces are top-heavy due to their silver mounts, ensure they rest on a stable, flat surface. Avoid placing them in direct, harsh sunlight for extended periods to protect fragile enamel details and delicate internal stoppers.
