Where should a pier mirror hang?

These tall glasses work best on narrow wall spaces, traditionally positioned between two windows to maximise available daylight. They also function effectively above console tables or as standalone statement pieces in hallways. Because of their significant height, ensure adequate wall support is available to bear the considerable weight of the carved wood and glass frame.

What is a trumeau mirror?

A trumeau mirror combines a vertical looking glass with an integrated upper panel containing an oil painting or decorative carving. These panels often depict pastoral scenes, seascapes, or floral motifs. Originating in eighteenth-century interior decoration, they served as architectural wall decoration rather than simple utility mirrors.

How do I identify mercury glass?

Historic mercury glass exhibits distinctive dark speckles, foxing, and a slightly grey or mottled reflective depth compared to modern mirror plates. The silvering process creates a warm, uneven reflection that shows its age. Original plates provide key evidence for dating eighteenth and nineteenth century mirrors.

Can these mirrors stand on the floor?

Certain taller variations are designed as leaner mirrors intended to rest directly on the floor while secured to the wall for stability. Most traditional pier mirrors, however, hang suspended above the skirting board or a matching console table. Check the frame construction and weight before attempting to use a wall-hanging mirror as a floor leaner.
