What is included in a companion set?

A standard companion set brings together essential hearth implements designed to tend a burning fire. These typically comprise a poker for shifting logs, a shovel for clearing ash, and tongs for handling fuel. Many arrangements also include a brush for hearth maintenance and a dedicated stand to keep the tools upright and tidy when not in use.

How do I date steel fire irons?

Dating steel fire irons involves examining the manufacturing techniques, handle styles, and metallurgical composition visible across the pieces. Earlier Georgian and Regency examples often display hand-forged shafts and distinctive turned brass finials. Later Victorian and Edwardian sets generally show more standardised machine finishing, brighter polished surfaces, and specific stylistic revivals such as Arts and Crafts or Gothic motifs.

Can I use antique tools on an open fire?

Many antique iron and steel tools remain robust enough for regular use on an open hearth. Solid forged iron and heavy steel pokers handle daily fuel manipulation effectively. However, delicate decorative brass pieces or items with fragile historic joins are better preserved for display alongside a working fireplace rather than heavy daily service.

What is the difference between andirons and fire dogs?

Andirons and firedogs are functionally identical terms describing the heavy metal supports that elevate logs inside an open fireplace. They allow air to circulate beneath the wood for a cleaner burn. While the terms often interchange, regional or period terminology sometimes favours one over the other, both serving as prominent decorative anchors for the hearth.
