A purdonium is a dedicated coal box with a hinged drop-front mechanism that allows coal to slide forward easily for refueling. These enclosed wooden boxes typically contain a removable metal liner and a dedicated shovel stored in a side rack. They became popular during the Victorian and Edwardian periods as a tidy way to keep messy coal hidden inside the formal drawing room or parlour.

How do I clean antique brass and copper?

Cleaning antique brass and copper requires a gentle approach to preserve the warm patination accumulated over generations. Mild soapy water and a soft cloth remove surface dirt without stripping the historic finish. Avoid harsh modern chemical abrasives that leave metal looking unnaturally bright and strip away the subtle traces of age that collectors value.

Were these pieces meant to sit directly on the hearth?

Many metal buckets and coal bins were designed to sit on the hearth or floor immediately beside the fireplace for easy access during tending. Wooden boxes usually stood slightly further away on the floor to prevent excessive drying from radiant heat. Insulating feet or raised bases on metal bins protected sensitive flooring materials from direct heat transfer.

How do I date an antique coal box?

Dating relies on observing the prevailing style, timber choices, construction methods and hardware fasteners present on the piece. Georgian and early nineteenth-century examples often display hand- dovetailed joints and heavy cast brass handles, whereas Edwardian purdoniums utilise machine-cut elements and patented drop-front hinges. Comparing the decorative vocabulary, such as Arts and Crafts hand-beating or Art Nouveau floral motifs, provides further chronological context.
