How do I date an antique map?

Dating relies on internal evidence such as cartographic changes, title cartouches, publisher imprints, and historical placenames. Printers often updated plates over decades, so style and typography provide crucial clues. Paper characteristics, including watermarks and chain lines on laid paper, further help narrow down the decade of production when combined with the cartographer's working dates.

Were these maps originally made for walls?

Most seventeenth and eighteenth-century maps originated inside bound atlases or were sold as folded sheets rather than intended for immediate wall display. Owners subsequently had them framed for interior decoration in later eras. Only specific large-scale wall maps were mounted on canvas and rollers for public offices or estate rooms from the start.

How should I hang and light an antique map?

Hang antique maps away from direct sunlight and strong artificial heat sources to prevent fading of the ink and watercolour pigments. Stable room temperatures and low humidity protect the paper fibres. Utilise UV-filtering glass during framing to provide an essential barrier against light damage over years of display.

What is the difference between an atlas engraving and a wall map?

Atlas engravings were printed as individual pages to be bound into books, featuring standard plate sizes and central folds. Wall maps were typically larger, sometimes multi-sheet compositions joined together for display. Both categories appear frequently in framed formats today, having undergone similar conservation and framing processes.
