How do you clean antique lustres?

Cleaning requires removing each crystal pendant individually to wash them by hand in warm soapy water. A soft cloth prevents scratching the old glass. The metal and glass bodies should be wiped carefully with a dry or barely damp cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners.

Were lustres meant for candles?

Many examples incorporate a central socket intended to hold a taper or candle. The hanging prisms were designed to amplify the flickering candlelight. Over time, many pieces transitioned into purely decorative objects for mantelpieces and side tables.

How do I identify Victorian lustres?

Victorian examples frequently appear in bold colours like ruby, cranberry and yellow glass, often featuring heavy hand-cut facets. They frequently date from the middle to late nineteenth century. Proportions tend to be robust, and many surviving sets include their original prismatic glass drops.
