What is a chamberstick used for?

A chamberstick was used to light hallways and bedrooms during the dark before electric lighting was invented. The wide tray catches molten wax while the loop handle allows safe transport. People carried them up to bed and left them on a hall table overnight. They often included a small cone snuffer to extinguish the flame without smoke.

How do I date an antique chamberstick?

Dating relies upon material composition, manufacturing marks, and stylistic indicators such as Georgian lines or Art Nouveau curves. Silver pieces frequently carry hallmarks indicating the exact year and assay office. Brass and ceramic versions require comparison of construction methods and registered design numbers. Heavier cast bases generally point to earlier centuries.

What are Brighton bun chambersticks?

Brighton buns are round, pocket-sized travelling candlesticks made from woods like olive wood or from polished brass. The two halves unscrew to reveal a hollow interior that stores the candle during travel. These portable items were popular with nineteenth-century travellers who needed reliable illumination on coaching journeys. Their compact shape protects the candle and prevents wax leaks in luggage.
