How do I care for antique leather upholstery?

Maintain antique leather by applying suitable conservation leather dressings periodically to prevent drying and cracking. Keep the pieces away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight. Dust the crevices regularly with a soft cloth. Avoid using modern chemical cleaners that might strip the original finish from the hide.

Can I mix these chairs with a modern table?

Pairing antique timber seating with a contemporary table creates a striking contrast in any dining space. The varied wood tones and traditional silhouettes introduce warmth and visual texture to modern interiors. Ensure seat heights align comfortably with the underside of the table apron before combining them. Standard dining heights remained relatively consistent across the nineteenth century.

How do I identify a Regency dining chair?

Regency chairs typically display classical architectural influences, featuring Saber legs, reeded frames, and occasional brass inlay. The wood is often dark mahogany or rosewood with restrained, elegant carving. Many examples date from the early nineteenth century and reflect classical Greek and Roman motifs. Look for robust joinery and fine grain figuring in the timber.

What is the difference between a side chair and an armchair?

Side chairs are built without armrests, making them compact enough to tuck neatly beneath a dining table or line a hallway wall. They served multiple domestic functions in bedrooms, parlours, and dining rooms. Armchairs feature integrated supports for the arms and offer a more substantial, commanding presence. These were traditionally reserved for the head of a table or use as a fireside seat.
