Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 1920 Georgian Revival three-piece lounge suite comprises a two-seater settee and two matching armchairs designed in an English country house style. The mahogany frames display dark brown woodwork, carved shell crests at the top of the splat backs, and short shaped cabriole front legs. Caned side panels and caned back panels complement the worn red velvet upholstered cushions, which show a tear on one chair seat. The settee measures 86 cm high, 147 cm wide, and 63.5 cm deep. Today, this suite suits placement in a traditional living room, drawing room, or conservatory for relaxation or reading. The sturdy mahogany frames and classic silhouettes provide a practical seating arrangement for daily use. Reupholstering the worn red velvet cushions allows the settee and armchairs to integrate seamlessly into various interior design schemes while maintaining their period character.

FAQs

A bergere suite traditionally refers to a matching set of upholstered armchairs and a settee featuring woven cane panels along the back and sides, originating in 18th-century France and widely adapted during the Georgian and Edwardian eras.

These suites are commonly constructed from dense hardwoods such as solid mahogany or walnut, paired with natural woven cane mesh inserts and upholstered drop-in or loose cushion seating.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved decorative motifs, such as shell or acanthus details, woven double or single cane panels, and original timber joinery techniques such as mortise and tenon joints.

Reupholstering the cushions in contemporary fabrics such as textured linen, boucle, or velvet allows the rich wood tones and woven texture of the cane to act as an architectural focal point in both traditional and modern living spaces.

Keep the timber frames dusted and lightly waxed, while occasionally misting or dampening the reverse of the cane with water to retain flexibility and prevent cracking.
