How do I date an antique canvas?

Dating relies on stylistic clues, costume details, artist signatures, and framing methods. The weave density and stretcher frame construction also provide chronological indicators. Examine the back of the canvas and stretcher for period inscriptions, wax seals, or old exhibition labels. These remnants often record past owners or specific gallery exhibitions.

Where should I hang an oil painting?

Display paintings away from direct sunlight to prevent fading and pigment degradation over time. Stable indoor environments protect both the canvas support and the wooden frame. Avoid placing works near active heat sources or in damp rooms like kitchens and bathrooms. Fluctuating humidity causes the canvas to expand and contract, risking paint cracking.

What is an old master painting?

The term generally applies to highly skilled European painters working before the nineteenth century. These works represent academic traditions and foundational art historical periods. Paintings from this category often depict mythological, religious, or historical narratives. They reflect the rigorous apprenticeship systems of their respective centuries.
