How do I care for burr walnut furniture?

Keep these items away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the delicate veneer from drying out or splitting. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a quality wax polish sparingly to maintain the sheen. Avoid using modern liquid cleaners or silicone sprays, as these can penetrate the polished surface and damage the historic timber underneath.

What is the difference between Victorian and Art Deco pieces?

Victorian burr walnut furniture tends to feature ornate carving, serpentine curves, and applied brass or ormolu mounts. These items often incorporate complex marquetry and detailed porcelain plaques. Art Deco examples lean towards geometric simplicity, relying on the natural grain of the burr walnut and clean silhouettes to create visual impact.

Where should I place a credenza in my home?

A credenza works effectively along a dining room or living room wall where its decorative front can be fully appreciated. The surface provides ample space for lamps, glassware, or decorative objects. Ensure the room humidity remains stable, as large case pieces can react negatively to extreme environmental changes.

How can I tell a card table from a writing table?

Card tables feature a hinged top that folds open to reveal a baize-lined playing surface, often supported by a rotating or pull-out framework. They were built for evening entertainment. Writing tables incorporate stationary drawers and flat, often leather-inset working surfaces designed for correspondence rather than games.
