What is an accent lamp?

An accent lamp is a smaller secondary light source designed to highlight a specific area or add atmospheric illumination to a room rather than light the entire space. These portable table lamps sit on desks, sideboards, or occasional tables, combining decorative materials like brass, glass, and fabric.

How do I date a brass lamp?

Dating relies on stylistic clues, manufacturing techniques, and the combination of materials such as marble, bronze, and cut glass. Pieces often reflect the prevailing aesthetic of their era, from Edwardian classicism to Art Deco figural work. Examining the wiring components, plug types, and construction fasteners also offers helpful chronological indicators.

Where were these lamps used?

Historically, these portable lights functioned on writing desks, reading tables, and parlour sideboards where focused task or ambient lighting was required. Their decorative bases ensured they remained attractive objects even when unlit during daylight hours.

Are these lamps wired for modern use?

Most antique lamps encountered on the market have been rewired at some point to meet contemporary electrical safety standards. Buyers should inspect the flex, plug, and lampholder to confirm compatibility with current household fittings. Original wiring is rarely retained for daily use due to degradation over the decades.
