What is a chiffonier?

A chiffonier is a low sideboard or cabinet that typically includes a combination of lower storage cupboards and drawers, sometimes topped with open shelves or a superstructure. They became popular in the Regency and Victorian periods as versatile dining room furniture. These pieces provide a useful alternative to a full bookcase by offering concealed storage alongside surface space for serving or display.

How do I adjust the shelves?

Many nineteenth-century bookcases feature adjustable shelving systems utilising wooden ratchets, brass shelf studs, or slot-in battens inside the cabinet carcase. This allows you to alter shelf heights to accommodate books of varying sizes. Care should be taken when adjusting older wooden tracks to avoid splitting the interior linings of the bookcase.

Are the glass doors original?

Original glass in older glazed cabinets often displays subtle imperfections, bubbles, and waviness resulting from historical cylinder or crown glass manufacturing methods. Examining the putty or wooden glazing bars can also indicate whether the panes date to the original construction of the piece. Replacement glass is common in pieces that have seen active use over the centuries.

How do I care for rosewood and mahogany?

Maintenance involves dusting with a soft, dry cloth and applying occasional applications of appropriate furniture wax to nourish the timber and maintain the polish. Direct sunlight and sudden changes in room temperature should be avoided to prevent veneer lifting or timber splitting. Maintaining a stable indoor climate preserves the original finish and structural integrity of hardwood furniture.
