What is an antique bookcase with drawers?

It is a hybrid piece of furniture designed to house books while offering integrated drawer space for documents and smaller items. These pieces typically feature open or glazed upper shelving sitting above a chest of drawers or a fitted writing compartment.

How do I date an antique bookcase?

Dating relies on examining timber choices, construction methods, hardware, and stylistic traits associated with periods like Georgian or Victorian. Hand-cut dovetails, secondary woods like pine or oak inside drawers, and original brass handles offer reliable clues to age.

Are the shelves adjustable?

Many library and open bookcases feature adjustable shelving systems utilising wooden ratchets or metal pins. This adaptability allowed owners to alter shelf heights for varying book sizes over the centuries.

How do I care for mahogany and oak?

Maintain the timber by keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources that cause wood to dry and split. Applying a traditional beeswax polish periodically preserves the lustre and protects the grain.
