Where should I place an antique storage bench?

These pieces suit entrance halls, boot rooms, and spacious landings where visitors drop bags and shoes. Their internal compartments hide clutter while providing a sturdy perch for daily footwear changes. Ensure you measure the clearance space for the seat lid to lift fully without hitting surrounding walls or coat hooks.

How do I care for waxed pine and oak?

Feed the timber periodically with a traditional beeswax polish to maintain the natural sheen and prevent the wood from drying out. Avoid placing them directly beside radiators, as excessive heat causes shrinkage and splits in old boards. Dust regularly with a soft cloth and wipe spills immediately to protect the historic patina.

How do I distinguish eighteenth-century settles from later revivals?

Early pieces display hand-riven timber marks, blacksmith-made iron or brass hardware, and pegged joinery showing irregular tool signatures. Revival pieces from the Victorian era often use machine-cut components and standardised screws. Examine the underside of the seat box for signs of wear consistent with centuries of domestic traffic.
