What are antique smoking stands?

Smoking stands are floor-standing pieces designed to hold ash trays, matches and smoking implements near a chair or in a smoking room. They typically feature a raised tray top supported by a turned wooden or brass column. These stands date largely from the Edwardian period and the 1920s, reflecting the domestic habits of the era when tobacco use was a formal social activity.

How do I date a silver ash tray?

Silver pieces carry hallmarks stamped directly into the metal, which include a maker's mark, a standard mark for silver purity, an assay office mark and a date letter. These stamps provide the precise year and location of manufacture. Items without silver hallmarks are dated through style, materials and construction techniques common to specific decades such as Art Deco or the Edwardian period.

What is cold-painted bronze?

Cold-painted bronze refers to cast bronze figures coated with non-fired paint, frequently produced in Austria during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. These pieces depicted animals, figures and novelty scenes. Care is required with these items because the original paint surface is delicate and easily damaged by moisture or aggressive cleaning.

How were coin dishes used?

Coin dishes incorporate genuine currency, such as Japanese yen or British trade dollars, mounted within sterling silver rims to form small ashtrays or pin dishes. They served as decorative novelty items and souvenirs. These pieces were kept on desks and smoking tables, combining precious metalwork with numismatic interest.
