How were these watercolours used?

Many of these pieces served as records of travel, capturing foreign buildings and ruins for display in British homes. Others functioned as design proposals, window sketches or precise records of historic interiors commissioned by property owners.

How do I care for antique paper?

Keep watercolours away from direct sunlight to prevent the pigments from fading and the paper from yellowing over time. Display them behind glass in stable indoor environments with minimal humidity fluctuations to protect the delicate media.

How do I date these works?

Signatures, dates inscribed by the artist, and framing materials often provide the most reliable clues to the exact period of creation. Stylistic shifts and paper types also help narrow down whether a piece originates from the eighteenth, nineteenth or early twentieth century.

What subjects are most common?

Cathedrals, abbey ruins, vaulted ceilings and grand Italian palazzos dominate the architectural subjects found in these historic portfolios. Street scenes, market squares and classical monuments also feature heavily among artists recording their travels.
