How do I adjust the height on these desks?

Most antique adjustable desks and reading tables rely on threaded wooden screws, metal pins, or ratcheted supports. Turning the screw or lifting the ratcheted bracket allows you to set the desired height. Take care to support the weight of the reading surface with one hand while loosening any locking mechanism to prevent sudden drops or strain on the aged timber.

Were these items used in offices or homes?

These pieces served multiple environments, appearing in private libraries, architects' drawing rooms, and commercial offices. Reading stands and music desks catered to studies and drawing rooms. Desk chairs and bankers lamps were built specifically for workspaces, counting houses, and administrative desks where adjustable lighting and seating were essential.

How do I care for the leather on a desk?

Many antique desks and swivel chairs feature inset leather surfaces that require gentle cleaning with a slightly damp cloth. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or excess moisture. Applying a specialist leather balm helps maintain the suppleness of the hide and prevents cracking across older red, green, or oxblood surfaces.

How can I tell the period of a lamp?

The period of an adjustable desk lamp is often indicated by the weight of the brass, the form of the base, and the style of the switch or shade fitting. Arts and Crafts examples display hand-hammered details and fluid lines. Later pieces from the 1920s frequently incorporate industrial articulated arms and heavier cast iron bases designed for focused task lighting.
