How do you adjust the shade?

Most models utilise swivel joints, pivot screws or sliding vertical stems that allow the shade to tilt and rotate independently from the main body. Heavier rise and fall designs employ counterweights or internal springs to hold the shade securely at your chosen height without slipping.

Are these lamps safe to use today?

Many vintage and antique desk lamps retain their original wiring and require professional rewiring and electrical safety testing before daily use. Consult a qualified electrician to ensure older brass fittings and internal cord pathways meet current standards.

How do I identify the period?

Dating relies on stylistic markers, such as ornate French Empire casting details on nineteenth century pieces versus streamlined geometric shell bases on Art Deco examples. Material choices like heavy cast bronze or hand painted toleware also help place pieces within Edwardian or early twentieth century production eras.

Where should I place this lamp?

These directional task lamps suit studies, reading desks and writing tables where focused light is required for detailed work. The adjustable shade allows you to shield the light source from direct view while casting illumination across papers or books.
