How are old oil lamps adapted for modern electrical use?

Many period oil lamps and candelabra are converted by running electrical flex through the existing central channel without altering the outer metal or ceramic body. This preserves the original appearance while allowing safe everyday illumination. Rewiring typically involves modern internal brass fittings and standard lamp holders that accept contemporary bulbs while respecting the antique structure.

What is the difference between ormolu and gilt brass?

Ormolu specifically denotes high-status mercury gilding on bronze, producing a deep, warm metallic lustre characteristic of fine French and English decorative pieces from the period. Gilt brass is a less costly alternative utilising brass as the base metal with a different application of gold colour. Closer inspection of the weight, colour depth, and chasing quality generally reveals whether a piece is cast bronze with true ormolu or lighter brass with applied gilding.

How do I distinguish Regency style from Victorian pieces?

Regency design draws heavily on strict Neoclassical and Greco-Roman proportions, favouring clean lines, dark mahogany, and restrained ormolu mounts. Victorian pieces often embrace heavier proportions, exuberant ornamentation, and diverse revival styles like Gothic or Louis XV. Examining the turning of table legs, the choice of timber, and the density of surface carving usually clarifies which aesthetic tradition a specific lamp or table follows.

Where should I place a side table lamp in a room?

These pieces function effectively on occasional tables, side tables, or writing desks where they provide localized task or ambient lighting. Pairing a ceramic or bronze lamp with a matching timber stand creates a balanced focal point. Placing them in corners or on low cabinetry allows the reflective qualities of ormolu mounts and polished wood to catch the light effectively.
