The Napoleon III style, spanning the Second French Empire, is characterised by an eclectic revival of historic designs, notably Louis XIV, Louis XV, and Louis XVI, featuring rich ornamentation, ebonised finishes, and elaborate marquetry.

These pieces typically incorporate ebonised wood or fruitwoods embellished with intricate floral marquetry, often utilising burr walnut, rosewood, and tortoiseshell, complemented by cast gilt-bronze or brass mounts and galleries.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-correct joinery, hand-cut marquetry details, high-quality cast bronze or brass hardware without modern finishing marks, and natural ageing of the timber and metal components.

Such pieces serve as striking focal points in modern schemes by contrasting them with minimalist surroundings, neutral walls, and clean-lined contemporary furnishings to highlight their craftsmanship.

Preservation requires avoiding direct sunlight and excessive humidity fluctuations to prevent veneer lifting. Dust gently with a dry microfibre cloth and apply specialist beeswax sparingly to nourish the timber.
