Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Moulded majolica tiles with classical swags: ornamental ceramics widely used from the 1880s.
Scorched tortoiseshell effect on natural bamboo: decorative treatment popular in the Aesthetic Movement.
Rough-sawn pine backboard: oxidised secondary wood holding the tile panel.
Stamped metal finial caps: period decorative tops sealing the hollow cane uprights.
Folded sheet-metal drip tray: period base liner with long-standing iron oxidisation.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This 19th-century Arts & Crafts stick and umbrella hall stand originates from the Victorian period. Constructed from honey-brown burnt bamboo with dark mottling and an aged patina, the structure incorporates an upper back panel inset with pale mint, emerald, and deep bottle green glazed ceramic tiles decorated with golden-yellow centres and classical oval medallions. The open lower section contains an original removable metal drip tray with an oxidised finish. Diagonal bamboo supports reinforce the open frame, which stands on four cylindrical bamboo uprights. The piece measures 86.8 cm high, 53.8 cm wide, and 21 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this item sits beside the front door or in an entrance hall to store walking sticks, canes, and umbrellas. The compact footprint fits narrow hallways, while the tile back and bamboo framework add texture to period interiors and traditional country house settings. Surface wear, marks, and glaze crazing are visible across the materials, demonstrating age.

Popularised during the late 19th century under the influence of the Aesthetic Movement and Arts and Crafts era, bamboo hall stands were designed as functional entry pieces that introduced orientalist motifs and natural materials into Western domestic interiors.

These pieces were typically constructed using burnt or tortoiseshell-lacquered bamboo framing, fitted with lead or zinc drip trays at the base and embellished with glazed earthen ceramic tiles across the top rail.

Authentic period examples feature natural irregularities in the bamboo nodes, hand-glazed Victorian or Edwardian art tiles, and original metal drip pans crafted to catch rainwater runoff from umbrellas.

Position the piece within an entryway, porch, or hallway space to provide practical storage for canes and umbrellas while adding historic texture and organic warmth to a contemporary setting.

Dust the frame regularly with a dry microfiber cloth, keep the item away from direct heat sources to prevent bamboo cracking, and gently wipe the glazed tiles with a lightly damp, non-abrasive cloth.
