This Georgian corner washstand is made from dark brown mahogany with a warm, rich colour, figured grain, and a mellow patina. The style is Georgian with a bow front, curved splashback, circular stretcher, and splayed legs. Notable details include a moulded edge on the bow-fronted top, a tall shaped splashback with a small quadrant shelf, a central drawer with a keyhole escutcheon flanked by dummy drawers, round turned brass knobs on the drawer fronts, a shaped undertier with a dished centre, and outswept splayed legs. It measures 107 cm high, 66 cm wide, and 43 cm deep. In a home today, this piece works well as a corner table, serving as a practical addition to an empty corner in a bedroom, hallway, or living room.

FAQs

Developed during the eighteenth century, a Georgian corner washstand is a space-saving item of furniture engineered to hold a ceramic washbasin, water ewer, and soap dish prior to the introduction of indoor plumbing.

These pieces were predominantly crafted from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, featuring hand-dovetailed drawer joinery, turned or splayed legs, and cast brass handle fittings.

Authentic Georgian examples exhibit hand-sawn timber marks on hidden surfaces, hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, original brass hardware, and natural timber shrinkage consistent with age.

An antique corner washstand functions well as a compact plant display stand, a hallway focal point, or an occasional side table in a cloakroom or bedroom corner.

Maintain mahogany timber by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a modest layer of beeswax polish once or twice per year while keeping the piece away from direct heat sources.
