FAQs

A whatnot is a piece of tiered open furniture that became popular in the nineteenth century, designed to display decorative ornaments, porcelain, and books in drawing rooms.

Victorian etageres and whatnots were commonly constructed from solid hardwoods such as walnut, rosewood, and mahogany, frequently enhanced with delicate satinwood marquetry and turned support columns.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature hand-cut marquetry inlays, hand-turned columns, natural oxidisation on the wood undersides, and traditional joinery techniques such as pegged joints or hand-cut dovetails.

Position the piece in a corner or alcove to display curated collections of studio pottery, framed miniature artworks, or trailing indoor plants alongside antiquarian books.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish twice a year, ensuring the piece is kept away from direct heat sources and damp environments to prevent veneer lifting.
