Antique French Empire Revival Mahogany Salon Suite with Ormolu C.1880

19th century
Description

An elegant French Empire Revival three-piece mahogany salon suite, dating to circa 1880 and comprising one settee with two matching side chairs.

The suite is united by warm mahogany frames, restrained neoclassical proportions and finely applied ormolu mounts. Classical mask medallions enrich the upper rails, framed by symmetrical scrolling foliage, while further rosettes, floral mounts and foliate ornament decorate the lower rails and tapering front legs. The settee carries the same decorative vocabulary on a broader scale, with shaped arms and upholstered arm pads creating a cohesive formal arrangement. Hawkins Antiques

All three pieces are upholstered in coordinated champagne-toned fabric patterned with small bees and laurel wreaths, a particularly appropriate motif for the Empire Revival aesthetic. Braided edging defines the upholstered backs, seats and arm pads, contrasting attractively with the reddish-brown mahogany and warm gilt detailing. Hawkins Antiques

Complete 19th-century salon suites are increasingly difficult to source intact, and this example has strong decorative and collector appeal because the three pieces retain consistent materials, proportions and ornament throughout. The suite can be displayed together as a formal seating group or divided within the same room while retaining visual continuity.

Ideal for a drawing room, reception room, bedroom or refined period interior.

Hawkins Antiques has specialised in fine furniture for over six decades, with each piece individually selected and accurately described.

French Empire Revival furniture, popular during the late 19th century, draws design inspiration from the reign of Napoleon I, incorporating classical Greek and Roman motifs, architectural mahogany frames, and decorative gilded bronze mounts.

These seating sets typically feature solid mahogany and mahogany veneers over hardwood framing, embellished with finely cast ormolu mounts and upholstered in woven silk or damask fabrics.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-chased ormolu details, traditional joinery techniques, original iron or steel fixings, and hand-tied coil spring upholstery within the seat frames.

A salon suite functions as a focal arrangement in a formal drawing room or wide hallway, where structured mahogany silhouettes contrast effectively against neutral contemporary walls and minimal architectural detailing.

Mahogany surfaces should be maintained with periodic applications of natural beeswax, whilst gilt bronze mounts require dusting with a dry, soft brush to protect historical patination without applying harsh chemical polishes.
