Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 19th-century French occasional table is designed for knitting and sewing tasks, executed in mahogany with a warm brown timber colour and polished finish. The piece stands at 69 cm high, 50 cm wide and 35 cm deep, holding a compact footprint suited for placement at the end of a sofa or beside an armchair. The top features an oval flame mahogany galleried rim, surmounting a single frieze drawer with curved matching veneers. Dual uprights take the form of lyre supports fitted with fine vertical metal rods, descending to an integrated lower tier shelf and splayed feet with arched floor supports. In a modern interior, the table functions as a refined side surface for holding books, drinks or decorative items while adding classical Regency character to a living room, study or bedroom. The construction displays figured wood grain patterns across the upper basin and lower shelf, balanced by the architectural curvature of the legs and stretcher base. Original surfaces exhibit a soft vintage patina developed through decades of family ownership, maintaining its structural integrity without modern alterations or repairs.

FAQs

Originating in 18th-century France and popularised during the Regency period, a tricoteuse is a specialized work table featuring a raised gallery edge designed to keep yarn, thread, and sewing materials from falling off.

These pieces were typically crafted from fine hardwoods such as mahogany or rosewood, often featuring lyre-shaped side supports, turned stretchers, brass rods, and crossbanded veneering.

Authentic 19th-century examples display hand-cut joinery, original brass fittings, natural wood oxidisation on the underside, and timber with characteristic shrinkage marks around the veneered gallery borders.

A tricoteuse works exceptionally well as a distinctive occasional table beside a reading armchair, positioned in a hallway alcove, or placed beneath a window to hold books and decorative items.

Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, ensuring the piece is kept away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber movement.
