Superb 19th-Century Sheraton Revival Satinwood Painted Occasional Work Table

Brief Description:

A superb and particularly elegant late 19th-century Sheraton Revival satinwood occasional work table, beautifully proportioned and richly decorated throughout in the refined Neo-Classical taste.

The oval satinwood top is exceptionally decorative, centred by a charming hand-painted oval figural panel depicting two classical maidens, surrounded by delicate painted ribbon, bead and foliate ornament. The outer border is similarly embellished with scrolling ribbons and floral decoration, all beautifully complemented by the warm, highly figured satinwood.

The frieze continues the decorative scheme with finely painted swags of flowers, ribbons and foliage, together with delicate ornament to the slender tapering legs. The legs are united by an elegant X-form stretcher, retaining further decorative detail and giving the table a wonderfully light and graceful appearance.

The hinged top opens to reveal the fitted interior of a traditional lady's work or sewing table, with compartments arranged around a pleated pale-blue silk work bag beneath. The lid is supported by its original chain, while the table retains its lock and decorative red silk tassel key.
