This Japanese Meiji period totai shippo vase dates from circa 1890 and rests upon a carved dark wood stand. The ceramic body features a textured dark brown tree bark finish rendered with traditional Japanese urushi lacquer, accented by brass wirework depicting a bird in flight, flowering peonies, foliage with berries, and a butterfly. Delicate enamel work in shades of red, black, green, and white decorates both the pear-shaped vessel and its slender, textured neck. The piece measures 19 cm high, 9.5 cm wide, and 9.5 cm deep. Suitable for display in a gentleman's library or on a drawing-room mantelpiece, the vase brings traditional craftsmanship to an interior scheme. The surface exhibits a tactile, multi-layered texture with detailed cloisonne motifs and contrasting metallic outlines against the dark brown ground. Placed on a desk, side table, or open shelving unit, the vessel functions as a decorative accent that showcases the complex body-cloisonne technique developed during the late nineteenth century.

Totai Shippo is a distinct Japanese enamel technique developed during the Meiji period where cloisonne enamel is applied directly onto a porcelain or ceramic body rather than a traditional metal core, frequently featuring a faux tree-bark textured glaze background.

These items consist of a fired earthenware or porcelain base, overlaid with copper or brass wires forming decorative compartments (cloisons), filled with coloured enamel pastes, and often finished with a dark, textured brown ceramic glaze resembling tree bark.

Authentic late 19th-century pieces display precise wirework, matte or semi-gloss textured ceramic surfaces surrounding polished enamel panels, and often show minor firing imperfections or visible wire edges consistent with hand craftsmanship of the era.

Position the piece as an accent object on a dark timber sideboard, within a curated bookcase, or alongside neutral ceramic vessels to allow its intricate hand-wrought details and muted earthy tones to contrast against contemporary backdrops.

Dust gently with a dry, microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners, liquids, or abrasive pads that could damage the delicate enamel work, lift the metal wires, or alter the textured surface finish.
