Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Three-plank oak top: natural shrinkage gaps and heavy working wear from prolonged use.
Integrated coin drop slot: cut directly into the counter top during trade use.
Traditional fielded panels: mortise-and-tenon joinery typical of nineteenth-century shop fitting.
Underside shelving: rough-sawn timber boards showing age darkening.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This nineteenth-century French shop counter is a provincial piece constructed from oak and paint. The design incorporates a warm brown three-plank top with a natural finish, paired with a vibrant green painted body that displays surface wear, along with a contrasting black plinth base along the bottom edge. Three large rectangular recessed panels span the front, and the timber exhibits a rustic appearance with a visible grain pattern and minor surface marks. The structure measures 82.5 cm high, 187 cm wide, and 62 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this sturdy counter functions as a kitchen island, a freestanding workspace in a utility room, or a statement console table in a spacious hallway. The substantial proportions and flat surface provide practical utility for food preparation, storage, or display purposes within domestic settings.

French shop counters were custom-built commercial fixtures used throughout 19th and early 20th-century retail establishments such as boulangeries, merceries, and dry goods stores. They provided a sturdy working surface for shopkeepers while featuring panelled fronts to present a neat appearance to customers.

These pieces were typically constructed from durable European hardwoods like oak or pine, utilising traditional joinery techniques including mortise and tenon joints. The tops were usually kept as natural scrubbed timber to withstand daily use, while the lower body was painted.

Authentic commercial counters feature signs of genuine historical wear, including surface distressing on the worktop, layered historic paint finishes, and hand-cut timber joinery. The back usually remains open or fitted with specific commercial drawer configurations rather than domestic shelving.

A shop counter serves effectively as a freestanding kitchen island, a room divider in open-plan living areas, or a reception desk in modern commercial spaces. The contrast between painted woodwork and natural timber tops pairs well with both modern and country schemes.

Maintain the natural wood top by applying clear beeswax or food-safe oils periodically to prevent timber drying. Clean the painted base gently with a damp cloth, avoiding abrasive chemicals that might strip aged paint coats or patina.
