Traditional hanging shelves and rack components originated in rural Welsh homes, frequently utilised for displaying earthenware plates, jugs, and pewter items within domestic kitchens and living spaces.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid native timber such as English or Welsh oak, featuring pegged mortise and tenon joints, shaped friezes, and backboards constructed from single or multi-board planks.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-appropriate tool marks, hand-cut joinery, natural timber shrinkage, age-related oxidation, and appropriate surface wear consistent with historical domestic use.

Mounting the piece on a plain plastered wall allows the warm timber tones and architectural silhouette to serve as a focal point, styled with ceramics, books, or botanical specimens.

Maintain the timber by keeping the shelves away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight, occasionally applying a microcrystalline wax to nourish the wood surface.
