This Anglo-Indian side table dates from 1900 and has a dark brown timber frame with an octagonal shape. The lift-off top has brass inlay set into the surface, complemented by extensive foliate fretwork and carved panels depicting leaves. The folding base features upright supports with intricate carving and pierced lower aprons above the feet. The woodwork shows a deep, rich patina with characteristic signs of age in the grain. Measuring 63 cm high, 61 cm wide, and 61 cm deep, this piece serves well at the end of a sofa or in a gentleman's library. The design provides a practical surface for everyday use while adding a decorative element to an interior.

Anglo-Indian furniture combines traditional Indian woodcarving techniques with European furniture forms designed for colonial residences and export markets during the British colonial period.

Dense native hardwoods such as teak, rosewood, or shisham were typical, often featuring brass wire inlay and hand-carved pierced fretwork panels that hinged together for flat-packing.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-cut brass inlays flush with the surface, subtle variations in hand-carved foliage, natural timber oxidisation, and traditional panel joinery.

Position the table beside an armchair or sofa as an accent piece, pairing it with neutral upholstery or modern ceramics to contrast with the detailed woodwork.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent shrinkage, dusting the carved crevices with a soft brush and applying neutral beeswax sparingly.
