A delft rack is a traditional wall-mounted shelving unit specifically designed for displaying ceramic plates, platters, and cups. Originating in domestic kitchens and dining rooms, these pieces allowed homeowners to showcase prized blue and white pottery while keeping tableware accessible.

Authentic period examples are typically constructed from native English timbers such as oak, elm, or pine. Construction features often include pegged joints, hand-planed boards, shaped friezes, and narrow plate-retainer grooves or wooden guard rails to prevent crockery from slipping.

Authenticity is determined by examining the timber patination, tool marks, fixings, and overall wear. Genuine period pieces exhibit hand-cut joints, traditional seasoning shrinkage, and authentic surface oxidisation that modern reproductions cannot replicate.

An antique wall rack introduces rich texture and historical character to contemporary spaces. It can be mounted in a kitchen or dining area to display curated collections of ceramics, mixing functional utility with traditional decorative appeal.

To preserve antique timber, maintain stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth and occasional application of traditional beeswax help maintain the natural lustre of the wood.
